The incident took place around 1:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, when an officer on routine patrol came upon a Jeep with heavy front end damage and missing a front wheel on Riverside Avenue, said the Westport Police.
It was apparent that the Jeep had hit a vehicle parked in the area based on the matching damage sustained by it, police said.
While checking out the vehicle, the officer noticed a woman standing in the area, but when he turned around to speak with her, she had left.
Multiple patrol units conducted an extensive search of the area for the operator which included a canine track but were unable to locate anyone.
Computer checks showed that the Jeep was registered to a Yogebeth Arias-Elizondo. Bridgeport police were contacted for assistance but had no contact with anyone at the suspect’s residence.
More than two hours after the initial discovery of the accident, Arias-Elizondo, of Bridgeport, contacted Westport Police Headquarters to report that she had been involved in a motor vehicle accident on Riverside Avenue and that she was returning to file an official report.
When she arrived, Arias-Elizondo told officers that a vehicle had swerved into her lane while traveling on Riverside Avenue and that in an attempt to avoid it, she had struck a parked vehicle. She claimed that she did not recall many details from the accident and that a Good Samaritan had transported her home.
She also said she couldn't call the police because she didn't have a cell phone with her.
Arias-Elizondo was charged evading responsibility, failure to drive in the proper lane, and traveling too fast for conditions.
